Located next to the Grand Prix circuit near Jerez, Montecastillo
opened in 1992. The official inauguration took place during the
1994 Turespaña Masters Open de Andalucía in which
course designer Jack Nicklaus competed together with his sons Jackie
and Gary. Following the Golden Bea´s preferences ("I
hate uphill lies") Montecastillo is mostly flat. But where
the terrain takes control a downhill course has been engineered.
"I like to see what ´m getting" is Nicklaus´
explanation. The 18th is one hole which proves the design philosophy.
An elevated tee looks down forty metres over a broad sweep of fairway
bordering a lake to the left with the green just beyond. The Montecastillo
Hotel and Castle Clubhouse overlook the final green from the right.
Sandy Lyle hit a massive drive on this hole into the hotel swimming
pool.
